"Tweak Your Pattern" Workshop on May 7th, 2022 (Zoom Workshop)

 

On Saturday, May 7th, the Northern Virginia Chapter of the ASG will present the second half of our Measure Up! Workshop.

Bonnie Firestone and Kathy Saladino will show you how to use the measurements you took in the first workshop on March 10th.  

You will learn how to apply them to your basic commercial pattern.  

You will learn the first step to get your commercial pattern to fit before sewing your first muslin.  

Master these techniques and each project will start much closer to your ideal fit! No more wadders, no more UFOs, no more tears. Well, we may just solve the fitting problem; we can't solve seam ripper problems...

GroupWorks is a secured site and a benefit of membership in the American Sewing Guild. Membership information is available on the ASG site and is $50 initially and $45 for renewals.

THERE IS HOMEWORK FOR THE MAY CLASS.  

To be prepared for this next step, there is homework.  As we all know, doing your homework ahead means more time to focus on the topic and get more done!

HOMEWORK:

Find a pattern with the following criteria:

• ·     Blouse or dress for WOVEN fabric only
• ·     Must have a side bust dart – may have other darts.
• ·     No yokes (darts are sometimes hidden here)
• ·     No drop shoulders
• ·     May be sleeveless.

Preparation for program:

1. Trace your pattern onto Pellon or tissue (cross and dot, medical exam paper, Swedish tracing paper, Palmer Pletsch Perfect Pattern Paper, etc.). You can use a pencil or pen for this.
   
   
2. Trace seam allowances. Seam allowances are typically 5/8 inches. A double wheel tracing wheel will work well for this. You can use your tape measure, a ruler, or tracing paper and your tracing wheel to make quick work of this step and the step below for markings. 
   
   
3. Trace all markings. These include notches, darts, apex (bust) point, lengthen/shorten lines, waist and hip line, center front, and back, as applicable.
   
   
4. Extend the length of the pattern 10” down from the waistline.

Simplicity patterns are on sale April 21-24, and Butterick and Vogue patterns are on sale April 28-May 1 at Joann's. In case you have no patterns in your stash, here are examples of patterns that comply with the criteria posted above:

*Create DIY Textile Arts Festival by Mancuso - June 10-12, 2021

 *Create DIY Textile Arts Festival by Mancuso, June 10-12

The virtual Quiltfest shows that have been presented by Mancuso Show Management have been really solid and impressive. Now they are selling tickets for an online textile arts festival, one in a series they started in January. The latest version of Create DIY will run from June 10-12. All the lectures and workshops will be Zoomed and the classes include not just quilting but also dyeing, crochet, paper collage, etc. 

Meg Cox wants to especially give a shout out for Liza Lucy's workshops, especially one on English Paper Piecing (EPP). This is for beginners and because she learned from her, she knows how passionate Liz Lucy is about EPP and that she's a terrific teacher. The workshop comes with a kit which is complete and thoughtful. She is doing two other classes as well you might enjoy. Go here for more info and to register for Create DIY in June.

Is Learning a New Sewing Technique a New Year's Resolutions?

If so, then the latest workshop offering by the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Sewing Guild delivers! We have planned a 1 1/2 hour virtual workshop with Kenneth D King on passementerie, the "the art of making elaborate trimmings or edgings (in French, passements) of applied braid, gold or silver cord, embroidery, colored silk, or beads for clothing or furnishings." There are so many different ways to apply this technique, from embellishing little French jackets, bedspreads, draperies, or upcycling ready-to-wear, that this becomes a versatile creative tool in your sewing kit.

From MacKenzie-Childs, passementerie is used to embellish vases for beautiful botanicals!

Threads Magazine features several articles on passementerie, including one by Kenneth King for leather trim.  This article describes how to use an inkle loom to create passementerie.  

Looking for a way to make a cape stand out? Passementerie can be used for a tone-on-tone trim or something that contrasts.

Finally, passementerie can elevate ordinary sleeves to sublime!  

No matter your skill level, this workshop will make you rethink embellishment! The cost is $30 per attendee and a supplies list will be provided to all registered and paid attendees. Deadline for registration is February 1; we must have 20 students for the class to happen.
