Sparking Creativity with a Single Sewing Pattern

Are you ready to dive into new sewing patterns, or do you want to challenge yourself to create something amazing with the ones you already have?

In our example pattern, Vogue 7538 was released in 1968. The sewist noted a similarity to Simplicity 7467, released in March 1976, albeit with a wider neckline and the addition of a ruffled, tiered skirt included in the pattern.

Here are some ideas based on her notes.

1. Lengthen the blouse to wear over pants

2. Substitute a buttoned cuff instead of elastic at the wrist. How dramatic would this look with a cavalier cuff? A frilled or ruffled cuff? What about an entire wardrobe of detachable cuffs to suit any mood?

3. Smock the top of the sleeves or the bodice---or both--- instead of gathering.

4. Use color blocks, prints, or different textured fabrics (e.g., eyelet and cotton voile), which might be a stash-buster if you don't have enough of either fabric!

5. Lengthen the bodice to dress length. Use a 20" zipper for opening or widen the neck for pullover dress.

6. Convert back opening to front opening and self-face or bias-bind. Close with buttons or tie.

7. Add a frill or ruffle to neck.

8. Change the jewel neckline to something else.

9. Consider fabric choice. Vogue 7538 recommended "soft fabrics such as broadcloth, surah, crepe, and jersey." The sewist suggested voiles and sheers. Simplicity 7467 recommended "crepe, crepe-back satin, crinkled muslin, gauze, challis, chintz, sateen, cotton broadcloth, printed voile, flocked fabric, lightweight knit." How would your fabric choice affect drape and wearability?

10. Consider belts as accessories! A self-fabric or contrasting fabric obi belt or macrame belt would rein in fullness. There are many online obi belt pattern tutorials. Here are a few:

DIY Reversible Obi Belt Tutorial

DIY Trendy Obi Belt

DIY Loewe Denim Obi Corset Belt

Working from a pattern you’ve already sewn gives you so many advantages. You already know what alterations will be required, you understand the fit, and it’s likely to coordinate effortlessly with pieces already in your wardrobe.

The sewist who had Vogue 7538 in her collection wrote notes to herself on the outside of the envelope. What’s your favorite way to experiment with a pattern you already love?

How do you organize or keep track of your sewing projects?

ASG Northern Virginia and Community Service Sewing

As a chapter of the American Sewing Guild, we have always supported sewing for community service. Each year, the ASG Northern Virginia Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) would select a charity, and every neighborhood group would contribute time, sewing, and resources toward this chapter project. A few years ago, the CAB empowered neighborhood groups to select the charity they wanted to support. This change not only energized our members but also gave each group the freedom to reflect their distinct character and passions through service work.

Our Neighborhood Groups support such charities as Quilts of Valor, Ryan's Case for Smiles, Dress a Girl Around the World, and Little Dresses for Africa. Individuals within the chapter also contribute their time and sewing expertise to personal charity sewing organizations, such as Dolls for Appalachia and Beyond, NICU Helping Hands, Virginia Green Baggers, and Hand to Hold. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, when Sew Friendly! is in session, you’ll often find our members lending a hand in the Pohick Library Maker Space. They assist patrons with sewing machines, troubleshoot issues, and offer guidance. After a year of meeting weekly with Sew Friendly experts, one patron progressed from having no sewing experience to creating her own winter coat—complete with expertly crafted welt pockets.

Sometimes, we serve as matchmakers for individuals who want to donate sewing machines, textiles, fabric, and notions. We are happy to connect donors with non-profit and community organizations who could benefit from this generosity. Additionally, our members may be available to support community events that require sewing expertise—whether it's hands-on help, demonstrations, or behind-the-scenes prep.

Name That Pleat!

Tom's Sons International Pleating, a family-owned company in the heart of New York City's Garment District that specializes in pleating fabrics, has made learning about pleating fun! They’ve launched a new YouTube channel that explores current fashion trends through the lens of pleating. Each video breaks down how to identify specific pleat types by name and offers insights into why a designer might choose that particular style—whether for movement, structure, or visual impact.

They are only on Episode 7, and the videos are quick and engaging. You can subscribe to the channel to be notified of when new episodes are uploaded.

They've also written a book on pleating. Pleating: Fundamentals for Fashion Design has over 300 photos of pleated fashions and shows you how, by understanding the types of pleats and their requirements in terms of fabrics, grain, bias, and other factors, you can improve your design's creation process, budget planning, and "wow" factor.

Please bring your sewing machine or serger, basic sewing tools, and neutral-colored thread. The room does have power strips down the center of the table, but you might like to bring an extension cord. If you don't want to sew, please come as we can use your help coordinating activities.

Success starts with great teamwork! To make this event run smoothly, we need to know how many people are attending and what tasks they’re ready to take on—whether it’s sewing, serging, ironing, setting up, cleaning up, or pitching in wherever needed. Wondering What the Fairfax Seams Sew Fun Neighborhood Group Has Planned for the Summer?

JUNE

On June 6th, we will do a charity sew-in at the law office. We have our usual space from noon to 3:30 pm. Kathy is supplying pre-cut fabric to sew the pillowcases. You can review how to make pillowcases using the burrito method here: https://www.craftsy.com/post/burrito-pillowcase/
or just search the internet. There many websites and YouTube videos.

Here is what you'll need for the June meeting:

  • Sewing machine, pedal, and power cord
  • Tools for sewing, like pins or clips, scissors, machine needles, etc,
  • Neutral colored thread
  • Extension cord or surge protector

What will be available:

  • Iron
  • Ironing board

Because the fabric is pre-cut, we should be able to sew a lot of pillowcases! Please email the Neighborhood Group leader if you are coming and if you are bringing a machine.

JULY

No meeting. Enjoy the summer! And start saving your scraps of fabric, trims, laces, and ribbons so you're prepared for our September meeting! Think about your color palette---this will help create harmony and consistency when we begin work on them in the fall.

Jumbled fabric scraps and lace
AUGUST

On August 1st Michele will do a program on gussets. Gussets are commonly found in areas such as underarms, crotches, and elbows of garments. They are also used in bags, pillows, and other sewn items to increase their capacity and durability. In addition, gussets can be decorative and add interesting design elements to garments.

SEPTEMBER

Joyce will be teaching us to make tiny fabric houses. Bring your scraps of fabric, trims, laces, ribbons, etc., preferably in a color palette that delights you!  When you start without a color palette in mind, you will spend most of your time sorting the gathered items rather than getting to work on your tiny house.

Tiny house made of fabric
OCTOBER

Our schedule is still fluid but we might be able to ask Sarah to do the presentation/lesson on Maedeup! Or, we might do another sew-in. Sheila shared information about Star Spangled Babies - which is such a great program!

NOVEMBER

November is our Challenge Reveal: mixed media and the color wheel. We can’t wait to see what you all do!

DECEMBER

December is our holiday luncheon. Details are still in planning.

SEW AND TELL!

The Sewing Workshop offers 25 meter rolls of 10mm double-sided fusible sewing tape. It’s great on hems, especially with knits. However, if you need additional sizes or additional strength, you can order from Best from Japan. While shipping starts around $14, a bulk purchase by members of ASG NOVA could result in significant savings!

Michele shared some great (and cozy) pieces she created for her upcoming week at the beach, made with awesome fabric from Style Maker Fabrics. 🏖️

Karen showed us her finished bag from Michele’s bag class, which features Washington Nationals fabric. It’s perfect! And she found a great solution to a knit neckline issue. Using inexpensive striped fabric (perhaps because the stripes were at a weird angle), Karen experimented with using elastic thread on the inside fold of the t-shirt neck binding to help the neck lay flat. The elastic is slightly shorter than the binding and only anchored at the shoulder seam ends. Great idea, Karen!
Here's an example of that technique.

Sarah shared some beautiful wearable art pieces: a bag, shoes, and jewelry, including a ring, bracelet, and earrings. She upcycled a traditional Korean garment, called a hanbok, and used traditional Korean knots, called maedeup, in her designs. Sarah is traveling to Korea soon and has offered to pick up kits for learning this traditional Korean knot. We may have talked her into doing a program on this—so if you order a kit through her, there will be a lesson on how to use it, too.

The beginners' kit includes tools and 35 colors of 36" long cords and costs about $20. With this length, you can make rings or bracelets. For belts, you will need thicker and longer cords. If you want a kit, please email fairfax@asgnova.org ASAP! She leaves soon, so don’t wait!

Melissa wore a simple woven raglan sleeve top by Sew House Seven called the Remy Raglan.  It’s super comfy and a quick make.

Johnnye shared some really cool buttons she picked up on her recent trip to Japan.

Nancy upcycled a pair of suede pants into a perfect suede handbag. She even incorporated the back welt pocket into an external side pocket. It looks so great!

We look forward to seeing you at our next Neighborhood Group meeting!

Fairfax Seams Sew Fun Neighborhood Group Presents Kitchen Sewing!

We will meet Friday, March 7th, at Noon.

NOTE THE LOCATION CHANGE:
SULLY GOVERNMENT CENTER
4900 STONECROFT BLVD
CHANTILLY VA 20151

This is the same location as the Annual Meeting about two years ago.  We will meet in the smaller, Frank Room which is adjacent to the larger room.

Melissa will give a presentation on sewing for the kitchen, including the Quilt-As-You-Go Method. If you have examples of either topic, please bring them to share.

Let's catch up with each other and share our makes, so please plan to attend if you can.

Zoom will not be available at this meeting.

Here are some ideas for the upcoming meeting!

  • Quilted Potholder
  • Fat Quarter Tea Towels
  • KitchenAid Mixer Cover
  • Toaster Cover
  • Cloth Napkins
  • Apron
  • Bowl Cozy
  • Casserole Hot Pad
Patterns you might have on hand include aprons, appliance covers, and curtains. Many are available for free online, or you can search Simplicity.com for inspiration.

There are a lot of reasons why you might want to think about sewing for your kitchen. Melissa will discuss how sewing for the kitchen can be fun and rewarding. One of the methods she will cover is QAYG and its applicability to a variety of benefits, including:

1. Customization: You can create kitchen items that perfectly match your style and the dimensions of your kitchen. From aprons to oven mitts, to placemats and table runners, you can ensure everything fits and looks just right.

2. Cost-Effective: Making your own kitchen items can be more affordable than buying them, especially if you use upcycled fabrics or repurpose old clothing.

3. Personal Touch: Handmade items add a unique, personal touch to your kitchen, making it feel more homey and inviting. Plus, they make great, thoughtful gifts for family and friends.

4. Durability: You can choose high-quality materials and sturdy construction methods, ensuring your kitchen items last longer than many store-bought alternatives.

5. Functionality: You can customize the features of your kitchen items to suit your needs. For instance, you could add extra pockets to an apron or make potholders with better heat resistance.

6. Sustainability: By creating your own kitchen items, you can opt for eco-friendly materials and reduce waste by repurposing old fabrics.

No matter what, sewing has you covered. Like these kitchen chaps, aka unisex apron with detachable potholders.

Muslin construction requirements will make the tweaking easier to do and easier to transfer to your pattern.

Even if you have not made a muslin, you will see and learn the fitting process by reading wrinkles and folds. Plus, the more eyes and assistants, the better.

The program will end once everyone has been fitted.

There are 23 unique necklines! That's a lot to consider when sewing a new dress or shirt. You've got to think about the silhouette, the fabric, and the print (or lack thereof). But you may also want to keep neckline types in mind to ensure you sew garments that are flattering and appropriate for the occasion.
If you're unfamiliar with the different necklines available, or if you're unsure which types are best for you, you've come to the right place! From necklines for broad shoulders to necklines for every bust size and body shape, we're covering it all.
