Woo-hoo! The January 2020 ASG Winter Sewing Retreat is now accepting applications!
This wonderful fun-filled event takes place Friday, January 24 through Sunday January 26, 2020 at the George Washington Hotel, 103 East Piccadilly Street, Winchester, VA 22601 (540) 678-4700
Early Registration is $150 for members and $200 for non-members
After December 25th, registration increases to $165 for members and $215 for non-members.
Registration includes sewing space, two morning and two evening meals. There are many restaurants available nearby for lunch. Please note the registration fees do NOT include hotel rooms.
The deadline for reservations MUST BE RECEIVED by January 9th, 2020.
There are NO refunds after January 9th, 2020.
Rooms are available for $98 on Thursday and $103 for Friday and Saturday, plus tax. Please make reservations directly through the hotel (540-678-4700). Ask for the block of rooms set aside for ASG. There will be a $5/day parking fee this year.
The main sewing room will be available from Friday morning at 9:00am until Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm. The room will be locked when it's unattended so you may bring your supplies and machines and leave them without having to pack up daily.
Space will be limited, so DON'T DELAY sending in your registration! This event usually fills quickly!
Checks must be RECEIVED in order to hold your spot. An e-mail will be sent as receipt of your check and registration. Please make your checks out to NOVA ASG.

Winter Retreat Coming Up!
38 people are signed up for this year's ASG Northern Virginia Winter Retreat at the George Washington Hotel in Winchester, VA!
DittoForm will be doing body scans for those who want accurate measurements and made-to-measure mannequins.
Sewing games will be played (looking forward to "Left, Right and Center" with fat quarters and sewing notions).
Sewists will have opportunities to visit local purveyors of craft, knitting, and sewing supplies and make visits to local restaurants and tea shops!

Winter Retreat was a huge hit this year. The space was sold out at 39 sewing friends for the weekend.
Confessions of a Retreat Newbie

I have never had any interest in going to a retreat. I didn't need to go away to find time to sew. I certainly didn't think I could enjoy concentrating on sewing for hours and hours. So when I ended up in Winchester at the George Washington Hotel for the retreat weekend (it's a long story), I brought my swimsuit and my exercise clothes and figured when I couldn't stand sitting anymore that I would enjoy the facilities and do a lot of shopping in the town of Winchester. That never happened!
What I hadn't counted on was the warm, friendly, infectious atmosphere among a group of enthusiastic women whose love of sewing is matched by their enthusiasm for helping others enjoy the retreat. I was welcomed by my table mate who promptly invited me to join her group for lunch.Then I got the “tour” of where the snacks were hiding, when to ring the cowbell, where the best restaurants and shopping were. That was before my machine was even plugged in.
The sewing room in Winchester was superb! I had expected a windowless ballroom with adequate lighting. Instead I entered a beautifully appointed space with large windows and several sparkling crystal chandeliers that left no shadowy corners. The room itself lifted my spirits.
You will notice that I haven’t talked about sewing yet. At our dinners, with our open seating and large tables, the conversation occasionally drifted to sewing, but also to a myriad of other topics. I discovered that my table mate’s husband went to my brother’s high school. Another member was able to supply me with my favorite Dutch licorice that I haven’t had in years. And there was the tale of the fur collars – but that’s another story altogether.
So, want to hear about my sewing? I used my sewing machine for about 5 minutes.
I was making a robot costume with a control panel. In the end, it was a collaborative project. My table mate helped brainstorm several “engineering” issues and went to the store for supplies. My fellow retreaters donated beading needles and thread, and safety pins. It did take me two days to get it done, but if I had been working at home alone, it would have stretched out to weeks. Each setback would have sent be scurrying out of the sewing room to do laundry or play candy crush. I returned home, refreshed and relaxed. And looking forward to another Winter Retreat.

My First Winter Retreat

The ASG sewing retreat was held last weekend. It was a first time adventure for me. We stayed at the George Washington Hotel in downtown Winchester, VA. The posh setting of this hotel was more luxury than I expected. The rooms were lovely and clean and I had a good rest both nights. I loved the fact that the hotel room wasn't too hot during
the night. The hotel staff was most courteous and helpful. We enjoyed two buffet dinners and breakfasts and they were simply delicious.
What sewing did I get done? Well, I finished several small projects that had been left undone at home. One of them was a mending job and another was to make two pillows out of preprinted fabric squares that were from my mother's stash. I also used lace from her stash as well. I finished my quilted table topper. I got some great advice from Barb who is an experienced quilter. My other project was to sew embellished stitch combinations onto 17 5 inch squares. I did complete them, but it got a little tedious after a while.
