Baseball caps have evolved to become a staple in fashion and pop culture. They are often considered an off-duty essential and can be paired with anything from a knitted sweater to a blazer or even a bomber jacket. Baseball caps are also popular because of their customizability and convenience. Baseball caps are widely available and come in a variety of styles, colors, and teams. For ideas on how to incorporate baseball caps with your look, just search the internet----there are tons of photos of people wearing baseball caps with anything you can imagine! <div><br /></div><div> You can make hats out of anything, but fabric is one of the easiest to sew. Making hats of felt or straw requires specialty supplies, training, and more expertise. </div><div><br /></div><div> I have a hat that was purchased from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hecht%27s#:~:text=Hecht%27s%20was%20founded%20and%20was%20operated%20for%20over,by%20Federated%20Department%20Stores%20on%20August%2030%2C%202005." target="_blank">Hecht</a>, a department store chain that operated along the East Coast. The hatbox features the Washington DC skyline, and the hat is stamped inside with "Glenover Henry Pollak." I learned, however, that Henry Pollak is not a hat designer!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvxdAjEBufYbqoRL_8OKiWRPrBVpVpmvx8X7gmOjPSZDC545CQNaO7h1yXQy0QZB6knjGmm9RJ2m-D4-ptk4esClT3vCnbBpmh5DyZ0XlhwXRmuGk2Rw87Gae6_s2gtMkywqt01Jw4P0gguProDEuQyTnHQVRldTOcBQoEnFeYUyaZLF7VDsdqHwn3O6u7/s1339/Pollak-edit.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1339" data-original-width="1126" height="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvxdAjEBufYbqoRL_8OKiWRPrBVpVpmvx8X7gmOjPSZDC545CQNaO7h1yXQy0QZB6knjGmm9RJ2m-D4-ptk4esClT3vCnbBpmh5DyZ0XlhwXRmuGk2Rw87Gae6_s2gtMkywqt01Jw4P0gguProDEuQyTnHQVRldTOcBQoEnFeYUyaZLF7VDsdqHwn3O6u7/s600/Pollak-edit.jpg" /></a></div>
The word "millinery" comes from Milan, Italy, where importers and sellers known as "mileners" or "milaners" sold trimmings and other accessories, including bonnets, hats, and caps. In 1897, the original Henry Pollak left Italy with his brother to seek their fortune and opportunity in Japan—which had been closed to outsiders for centuries. They became successful exporting straw braid to the headwear community in Europe and in America. In 1917, Henry and his wife, Eva, moved to New York and started importing hat bodies and braids from around the world. Henry Pollak's company was incorporated in New York in 1917. </div><div><br /></div><div>Domestic manufacturers of hat bodies required country of origin stamps inside of the crown of the hat bodies in the middle of the 20th century and hat bodies came from all over the world. That is why so many wool and fur felt hats are marked with the “Henry Pollak” stamp. Henry Pollak Inc sold the raw hat bodies to the milliners—but the company was never a designer or producer of the finished hats. Many hat designers (<a href="https://www.biography.com/history-culture/halston" target="_blank">Halston</a>, <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/obituary-fashion-designer-adolfo-sardina" target="_blank">Adolfo</a>, <a href="https://www.vintagevixen.com/pages/vintage-designer-bios-frank-olive" target="_blank">Frank Olive</a>, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1990/01/02/obituaries/lilly-dache-97-creator-of-hats-for-the-fashion-set-of-yesteryear.html" target="_blank">Lily</a> <a href="https://humboldthaberdashery.com/blogs/biographies/lilly-dache" target="_blank">Dache</a>, <a href="https://www.suzannehats.com/" target="_blank">etc</a>.) used these hat bodies. It is ironic that the name that survived in the hats is the name “Henry Pollak,” who did not design hats at all!
</div><div><br /></div><div>Sewists may be most familiar with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Underwood" target="_blank">Patricia Underwood</a>, who partnered with <a href="https://simplicity.com/voguepatterns" target="_blank">Vogue Patterns</a> for a series of hat patterns. It’s her brain. Sewing challenges spur risk-taking because it's a low-risk exercise with the potential for a fantastic payoff! After all, these are learning opportunities. </p><p>Here are a few ideas to get you started.</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Use the same pattern selected by the challenger to create a project. Marvel at the different variations sewists can create! An alternative to this is to use the same fabric. </li><li>Everyone writes down a project (aka <a href="https://elizabethmadethis.com/conquer-your-sewing-ufos-in-5-steps/" target="_blank">UFO</a>) that is lingering in their time-out bin or stash. A deadline is agreed upon and everyone reports the status at the end of the challenge period. This <a href="https://www.saturdaynightstitch.com/5-common-sewing-new-years-resolutions-and-how-id-rewrite-them/" target="_blank">written commitment provides accountability</a> that can move a project forward.</li><li>Issue a "<a href="https://www.sewdaily.com/sewing/zero-waste-sewing/" target="_blank">zero-waste</a>" challenge and review the final projects</li><li>Upcycle or alter a garment you never wear but don't want to discard. Make it better, however you define "better."</li><li>Quilters must use a garment technique and garment sewists must use a quilting technique in a challenge.</li><li>Propose a technique challenge. Sewing books that demonstrate <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Creating-Couture-Embellishment-Ellen-Miller/dp/1780679491" target="_blank">couture techniques</a>, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Sashiko-Sourcebook-Susan-Briscoe/dp/0715318470" target="_blank">sashiko</a>, <a href="https://www.gathered.how/sewing-and-quilting/best-quilting-books/" target="_blank">quilting</a>, and <a href="https://teachyoutosew.com/best-embroidery-books/" target="_blank">embroidery</a> lend themselves well to this challenge. Sewists may also find inspiration from YouTube videos, Instagram, and blog posts. </li><li>Identify the oldest pattern, notion, or fabric in your stash and make something with it.</li><li><a href="https://www.whiteelephantrules.com/" target="_blank">White Elephant Challenge</a>: Everyone brings a predetermined amount of fabric in a bag and bags are exchanged. (No peeking!) This could extend to trims, buttons, notions---the possibilities are endless!</li><li>Identify a "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_in_August_(Yellowstone)" target="_blank">Christmas in August</a>" recipient (could be an individual or a facility). Everyone is challenged to create a sewing donation for the recipient. This could be hats, adult bibs, walker/wheelchair totes, scarves, etc.</li></ul><div>What ideas have you used for sewing challenges? named BriarRose, who was commenting on a thread about Carol Burnett's outfit on
a TV special. The user was expressing their admiration for the fabric design
and their confidence in their sewing skills.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;"></p>
<p class="ParagraphTextStyle" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Libre Franklin;">The phrase could also be interpreted as a metaphor
for creativity and problem-solving. It implies that fabric is not a fixed or
rigid material, but rather something that can be manipulated and transformed by
human ingenuity. It also suggests that there are no limits to what one can
achieve with fabric, as long as one has the right mindset and attitude.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="ParagraphTextStyle" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Libre Franklin;">There are other contexts where the phrase could be
relevant, such as physics, fashion, or philosophy. <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2018/08/11/ask-ethan-is-spacetime-really-a-fabric/" target="_blank">For example, some physicists have argued that spacetime is not really a fabric, </a><a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/why-more-physicists-are-starting-to-think-space-and-time-are-illusions" target="_blank">but rather an illusion or an emergent phenomenon.</a> <a href="https://hbr.org/2022/01/the-myth-of-sustainable-fashion" target="_blank">Some fashion experts have criticized the sustainability of fast fashion and the use of synthetic fabrics.</a> Some philosophers have
explored the nature of reality and the role of human perception in shaping it.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="ParagraphTextStyle" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Libre Franklin;">In any case, the phrase is an interesting and
provocative one, and it could inspire many different kinds of creative works.
For example, one could write a poem, a story, a song, or a code using the
phrase as a theme or a prompt. Here is an example of a poem that I wrote using
the phrase:</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="ParagraphTextStyle"><b><span style="font-family: Martel;">It's Just Fabric; We Can Out-Think It</span></b><o:p></o:p></p>

<p>Thoughts and prayers can hold someone up spiritually, but a quilt can wrap them in love.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/wraptheworldwithquilts/" target="_blank">Wrap the World with Quilts, Inc.</a> is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to sending quilts and sewing machines where they're most needed.</p>
<p>Their mission statement says it all: <blockquote><b>Through the gift of a handmade quilt, we provide comfort and love, warmth and human connection to those suffering around the world.</b></blockquote></p>
<p><a href="https://linktr.ee/wraptheworldwithquilts" target="_blank">Wrap the World with Quilts</a> has been sending quilts to Ukraine but have recently added Maui as an option. Use the drop-down location option, "Wherever Needed Most," to route your donation to Maui.
The "Aloha Quilts Donation Drive" began with Marilyn at the <a href="https://www.mauiquiltshop.com" target="_blank">Maui Quilt Shop</a>.
If you'd like to register quilts as a group, just include a note in the box with a name and email and specify they should go to Maui.</p>
<p>Marilyn says, "Your donated quilts will be distributed wisely to those affected by this horrible fire. These quilts will give them comfort and help them heal as they try to overcome this tragedy. Thank you for caring about Maui! With Love and Aloha." </p>
<p>For shipping, Wrap the World with Quilts has partnered with GiveBackBox and UPS for an inexpensive shipping option that will go directly to the receiving organization.
Donations may also be sent directly to the Maui Quilt Shop at 18 Central Ave, Wailuku, HI 96793</p>
<p>Go to <a href="https://givebackbox.shop/products/wrap-ukraine-with-quilts-shipping-label?_pos=1&_sid=1517ee98d&_ss=r" target="_blank">THIS LINK</a> to add the label to your cart. The address will be preprinted and, after you pay the $20 flate rate fee, the label will be emailed to you. Simply print it out to place on your package. The label will cover the costs for any size box up to 50 lbs.</p>
<p>Just drop it off at any <a href="https://www.theupsstore.com/" target="_blank">UPS store</a>.</p>

I was amazed at how beautiful the models in the book were when their clothing was tweaked to fit them better. Even though it was the same pattern, they appeared more polished and stylish. The Fit Clinic photos in the book are eye-opening!
I was able to check the book out of my public library, but if it's not available from your public library or you don't have the funds to buy your own copy (it does come with five patterns: <a href="https://www.cashmerette.com/pages/kersoe-top" target="_blank">Kersoe Top</a>, <a href="https://www.cashmerette.com/pages/honeybourne-dress" target="_blank">Honeybourne Dress</a>, Stanway T-shirt, Foxhill Dress, and Magna Pants). <div><br /></div><div>The Kersoe Top is your foundation for practicing <a href="https://www.cashmerette.com/pages/full-bust-adjustment" target="_blank">FBAs</a> and <a href="https://www.cashmerette.com/pages/small-bust-adjustment" target="_blank">SBAs</a> and creating a tried-and-true pattern for future dart manipulations and techniques. The Honeybourne Dress expands on this foundation by introducing a sleeve and gathered skirt using woven fabrics. The Foxhill Dress is a sleek affair with princess seaming and a gored skirt made up in ponte knit or scuba fabric. The Stanway T-shirt is a raglan t-shirt, a notoriously difficult style for fitting those with large busts, but you'll learn how to master fit with this! Finally, the Magna Pant is a woven fabric slim-leg trouser pattern with an elasticized back waist and optional side zip. Everything you need for a capsule wardrobe can be found here---shorts from the Magna Pant, mounting a waistband or casing for the skirt portion of the Honeybourne Dress, lengthening the Kersoe Top into a tunic...you are only limited by your imagination and willingness to improvise! </div><div><br /></div><div>If you don't have funds to buy the book or can't get the book from your local library, here are online resources that can fill some of the gaps.</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://curvysewingcollective.com/" target="_blank">Curvy Sewing Collective</a> </div><div>This site provides tutorials, pattern reviews, and lists of plus-sized pattern companies. Specifically, the poster wanted to know if it would it be okay to suggest that pressing the garment before posting would improve the appearance of the garment.</p><p>That ignited a hailstorm of responses across the spectrum from a horrified "Never!" to "They're adults, not five-year old children." A few Home Economics-trained sewists, a handful of degreed Textile specialists, and sewists in their sixth and seventh decades provided reasoned advice for pressing as one sews, even acknowledging that sewing only makes up about 30% of constructing a garment. The bulk of sewing is <u>actually in preparation</u>. </p><p>As one sewist stated, pressing elevates your garment from "Look! I made this" to "You can't tell I made this." [And which camp do we want to be in?]</p><p>If you're interested in understanding more about the importance of pressing in sewing, check out <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSHtaUm-FjUps090S7crO4Q" target="_blank">Bernadette Banner's YouTube</a> video discussion with tailor Barbara Pesendorfer of <a href="http://royalblack.at/" target="_blank">Royal Black</a>: </p><p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-9VDZ6eJyJA" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></p><div>Ann Steeves wrote a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218170011/https://gorgeousfabrics.com/blog/2011/01/18/and-now-a-word-from-the-pressinatrix/" target="_blank">blog post</a> on Gorgeous Fabrics website about the importance of pressing and ends the article with a quote from <a href="https://www.palmerpletsch.com/product/couture-book/" target="_blank">Roberta "Bobbie" Carr</a>: <b>Pressing IS sewing</b>. We will still hold a hybrid meeting for those unable to attend in person, and I know a lot of people will already be traveling and unable to attend in person anyway.</p><p>Our goals for this meeting are to:</p><p></p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Show off our fall projects.</b> Hopefully you were able to make coats, jackets, shackets, outerwear, OR practiced some of the elements that we have presented over the past few months (e.g., a personal primer of welt pockets or bound buttonholes, interfacing experiments, or tailoring techniques, such as pad stitching or catch-stitching). </li><li><b>Develop a sewing program for 2023.</b> Not only do we need to know what our members would like to learn in 2023, we also need to know what our members know that they are willing to share with others (because <a href="https://www.thequotablecoach.com/to-teach-is-to-learn-twice/" target="_blank">to TEACH is to LEARN TWICE</a>). Also, everyone has a sewing skill that that can be shared or learned, no matter how novice or experienced. </li></ol><div>This format works beautifully for both in-person and virtual attendance! Please take photos of your lovely garments and put them into some sort of presentation software such as PowerPoint so we can better appreciate the details of your projects AND so we can upload to web site and our social media channels. This can help with another technique---learning to use virtual technology better (e.g., Share Screen). </div><div><br /></div><div>Please take some time in the next week or two to review your personal sewing resolutions for 2023 so we can have a fantastic discussion on Saturday, December 19, 2022, from 8:00am to 10:30am, whether you attend in person at Pohick or dial in via Zoom!</div><p></p>Mary Katherine Parkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11500734079315973325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6563053896746361473.post-29386399286491171172022-11-30T07:28:00.000-05:002022-11-30T07:28:04.928-05:00New Woodbridge Neighborhood Group to Start Meeting!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">If you've been waiting for a Neighborhood Group to meet near Woodbridge, then you are in luck! This initial meeting will take place on Saturday, December 10, 2022, from 10:00am to 12:30pm in the cafeteria of the </span>Prince William County Government - A.J. Ferlazzo Building located at 15941 Donald Curtis Dr · Woodbridge, VA</div><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTOLP7vErg2CiMsMrWCelRZEbHTT_CbcdYN85548HzVLqkwMMv6u5DjlDXKOf4V_2Hj9RfB6iTooBUjY0A4zVqI8M_RlRChK8l5nuPqu7G9IfUviQqwxBSc6j362Pt8RPaMNxTIW9rwuCUmZtWto-k_L5ujiXJMo9lncLe19rHqWIZEHmlu3048K6NNg/s272/capture1.heic" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="160" data-original-width="272" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTOLP7vErg2CiMsMrWCelRZEbHTT_CbcdYN85548HzVLqkwMMv6u5DjlDXKOf4V_2Hj9RfB6iTooBUjY0A4zVqI8M_RlRChK8l5nuPqu7G9IfUviQqwxBSc6j362Pt8RPaMNxTIW9rwuCUmZtWto-k_L5ujiXJMo9lncLe19rHqWIZEHmlu3048K6NNg/s1600/capture1.heic" width="272" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">The first agenda item is to decide what to call this Woodbridge Neighborhood Group. Several names have been suggested. To get your creative juices flowing, here are a few:</span></div><p></p><p></p><ul><li>Saturday Sewcial Club</li><li>Woodbridge Bumble Bunch (A bumble bunch is the tangled mess of threads that sometimes happens with sewing.)</li><li>Woodbridge Spool Spinners</li><li>______________ (Your suggestion here)</li></ul>Next, the group will need a secretary to take notes during the meeting. Discussion about meeting locations, dates and times will also be decided at this meeting. <p></p><p>Then the group will need to do program planning and outreach for 2023. Attendees are encouraged to bring a list of ideas for projects, challenges, or community outreach ideas to discuss. Think about what you want to learn over the next year and any special skills, techniques, or projects you've completed that you could share with others on their sewing journey. </p><p>Of course, the group will learn about Northern Virginia chapter events and happenings.</p><p>Finally, the group will do Show and Tell, so bring or wear your makes! Let everyone know what you've been working on or ask for advice to get past a tricky spot in fitting or finesse. </p><p>This will be a hybrid event with Zoom available for those unable to attend in person.</p><p>If you are not already a member of the <a href="https://www.asg.org/" target="_blank">American Sewing Guild,</a> you will be able to attend up to two meetings before being requested to join. To receive the Zoom link, please RSVP on our Meetup site here: <a href="https://www.meetup.com/northern-virginia-chapter-of-the-american-sewing-guild/events/290051709/">Woodbridge Neighborhood Group Monthly Meeting, Sat, Dec 10, 2022, 10:00 AM | Meetup</a></p><p style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: OpenSans, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19px; line-height: inherit !important; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px !important; margin-right: 0px !important; margin-top: 0px !important; min-height: 28px; padding: 0px !important;"><br /></p>Mary Katherine Parkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11500734079315973325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6563053896746361473.post-10849806604919813842022-10-29T17:34:00.003-04:002022-10-29T18:06:23.281-04:00Annual Meeting was a HUGE success!<div class="separator"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik00UGvPPnRabzi_KfD5jxmYsbhydyDuiV2GYAQKuCrm9uff4jBLQjZV8k3QZ1oYYQq2J-zOAwUvJ6gCc-hj9JbzKENJY_vbTXgObJgA96u9eRsfiKOWrhoRCAjW6PfWm8tzv3VqU7ZxIpnyj6xTbnSPmpbGt9fWzKKWIHxVx99M35BkR7-65CMdLVlA/s783/Capture.JPG" style="clear: left; display: inline; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="783" data-original-width="779" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik00UGvPPnRabzi_KfD5jxmYsbhydyDuiV2GYAQKuCrm9uff4jBLQjZV8k3QZ1oYYQq2J-zOAwUvJ6gCc-hj9JbzKENJY_vbTXgObJgA96u9eRsfiKOWrhoRCAjW6PfWm8tzv3VqU7ZxIpnyj6xTbnSPmpbGt9fWzKKWIHxVx99M35BkR7-65CMdLVlA/s400/Capture.JPG" /></a></div>We're so sorry if you were unable to attend this year's Annual Meeting. No matter which data you'd like to collect and record, the sewing and needle arts seem uniquely positioned to capture and beautifully display this information!</div></div><div>In quilting, it's fairly easy to create a temperature quilt. You simply assign a number or range of numbers to a particular color. If you do this for a year, you'll have 365 blocks, so draft your measurements accordingly! Darcy has an example of her temperature quilt here: <a href="http://darcyquilts.com/2019/01/22/what-is-a-temperature-quilt-and-how-do-i-make-one/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Temperature Quilt</a> Rachel discusses her temperature quilt here: <a href="http://rachel-thelifeofriley.blogspot.com/2013/12/temperature-quilt-details.html">The Life of Riley: Temperature Quilt: The Details (rachel-thelifeofriley.blogspot.com</a>) and check out this collection on <a href="https://www.pinterest.co.uk/GillyMacDesigns/temperature-quilts/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiMPkTAE0DFRbvt197H4_c-ixLBognqaGeX090xiBF8SKAWGb0z6z0WRrzUeEwFCFNZ3Q6zIFuE8KmdiPvVunLS5RABYCzqS1mWKiruX9PMkQT2sb3NNC88nJCvoaM0RxJDI8C02vQdX3hykAnSgtZhU80cAx--hDXqO-Vcj-3Njudpm7O2E35h5jTiXw=s2000" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiMPkTAE0DFRbvt197H4_c-ixLBognqaGeX090xiBF8SKAWGb0z6z0WRrzUeEwFCFNZ3Q6zIFuE8KmdiPvVunLS5RABYCzqS1mWKiruX9PMkQT2sb3NNC88nJCvoaM0RxJDI8C02vQdX3hykAnSgtZhU80cAx--hDXqO-Vcj-3Njudpm7O2E35h5jTiXw=s320" width="128" /></a></div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>On this <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/comments/br1rdw/temperature_quilt/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">quilt</a>, the triangles represent the highs and lows for each day, creating a different effect. <a href="https://thequiltshow.com/see-quilts/featured-quilts/climate-change" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Quilt Show</a> featured an exhibit of quilts devoted to climate change. </div><div><br /></div><div>If you're into knitting, there are many examples of capturing temperature changes. If you do, there are a few ways to approach sewing resolutions. You might want to think about these questions when deciding on your sewing goals for 2022.</p><p></p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>What do you want or need? This can provide direction for creativity or identify gaps in your sewing knowledge or wardrobe.</li><li>What have you learned from previous successes and failures? If you have <a href="https://www.threadsmagazine.com/2011/06/29/sewing-ufos" target="_blank">UFO</a>s, why are they unfinished? Maybe it's time to put that UFO back on your to-do list.</li><li>What values are important to you? Are you working towards a capsule wardrobe? A more ethical one? Are you on a budget? Working within your personal constraints can paradoxically provide opportunities for greater growth.</li><li>What do you wear all the time? In this challenge, sewists plan to make nine projects over the course of a year that is depicted in a 3x3 grid. The joy comes in being able to check off those projects as completed during the year or provide feedback for not completing a project. If you've been saving photos of patterns, fabric, or fashion inspiration, you can use one of <a href="https://influencermarketinghub.com/instagram-collage-apps/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">these apps</a> to help you refine your sewing project ideas. </p><p>If you're not ready to commit to specific sewing patterns or projects, you can create your list of MakeNine Challenges by focusing on t<u>ypes of projects</u> or <u>project themes</u>. This could give you more latitude to sew an <a href="https://www.threadsmagazine.com/assets/pdf-download/TH_member_may.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">A-line cotton skirt</a> instead of a <a href="https://sewing.patternreview.com/review/review/3148" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">guipure lace skirt</a> that requires couture-level techniques when you're not quite ready for that. Or maybe some Ghillie pants to use up sewing scraps.... Or maybe not. </p><p>You can download a PDF from <a href="https://homerowfiber.co/" target="_blank">Home Row Fiber Co.</a> for your projects here. <a href="https://homerowfiber.co/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/MakeNineWorksheet.pdf" target="_blank">Make Nine Worksheet</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgUHfBzpH0q6Xqmnzs2Rsz91jZ_N7O3Kr6bLxr02QAwcTphvyPOinkdptvyz7KJVRgh0h_KokZDaM5YMoZwNRmfES0Hfq7VaFFsPg_v6alZsm0r0sDjvecu52q1asTv1LStezw1MufsqyGyAgNnrRtq5JLSk3D3iPRQCOCj7-T1EB6RO0a70LekPgGU5w=s786" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="786" data-original-width="640" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgUHfBzpH0q6Xqmnzs2Rsz91jZ_N7O3Kr6bLxr02QAwcTphvyPOinkdptvyz7KJVRgh0h_KokZDaM5YMoZwNRmfES0Hfq7VaFFsPg_v6alZsm0r0sDjvecu52q1asTv1LStezw1MufsqyGyAgNnrRtq5JLSk3D3iPRQCOCj7-T1EB6RO0a70LekPgGU5w=s320" width="261" /></a></div><p>2. <b>New Year's Resolutions</b></p><p>For this one, you create a list of what you want to accomplish in your sewing journey over the next year. You can listen to a podcast on sewing resolutions, read </p><p><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/comments/rtk5xu/new_years_resolutions/" target="_blank">Reddit</a> has a number of sewing resolutions that might hit uncomfortably close to home.</p><li>I will not start a sewing project three hours before I need to wear it for a special occasion.</li><li>I will not save every tiny scrap of fabric on the off chance that I "might be able to use it someday.”</li><li>I will actually pin everything, even if it’s “just one straight seam how hard could it be.”</li><li>I will not buy new fabric until I’ve at least started the project I bought the last fabric for.</li><li>I will actually check how much thread I have in my bobbin before I start sewing. It doesn’t have to be spotless, but it does have to be navigable.</li><div><br /></div>Using the questions posted above, you can develop sewing resolutions that work for you.<div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjROkm3NdSO8Ioxohx0kwVlTekZ8M0TFI5VYSXde2IxS-0LVFNkdA6AjiXQ4n4GHha_hX1U-TvJq7wAc2OiHD1C03hXqGJBW4x0y0pat2OOB_JVkcw-TEyVnDaOeCdeNuJDvwJZdDwerG3Hn_s8CFlIJOvU5-qgGQn0td97PMTekPS6gsONGU9rEnAyXA=s1156" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1156" data-original-width="867" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjROkm3NdSO8Ioxohx0kwVlTekZ8M0TFI5VYSXde2IxS-0LVFNkdA6AjiXQ4n4GHha_hX1U-TvJq7wAc2OiHD1C03hXqGJBW4x0y0pat2OOB_JVkcw-TEyVnDaOeCdeNuJDvwJZdDwerG3Hn_s8CFlIJOvU5-qgGQn0td97PMTekPS6gsONGU9rEnAyXA=s320" width="240" /></a></div>3. <b>Too much fabric, too many patterns, and nothing to wear.</b> Maybe you just need to <b>sew with a plan</b> (SWAP). Planning what to sew is just as important as resolutions or challenges. Maybe you have some special events coming up in 2022. Rather than waiting three hours before those special events to cut out and sew your projects 😂, you plan ahead and enjoy the sewing journey, unless you love those adrenaline-filled last-minute sewing projects. <a href="https://www.anitabydesign.com/i-quit-sewing-why-you-may-want-to-join-me/" target="_blank">Anita by Designs</a> discusses this on her blog and this approach to sewing might appeal to you. </div><div><br /></div><div>I love the concept of creating a sewing project kit. By keeping everything together in one location until I have a chance to sit down and sew, I create less opportunities to lose or misplace the small bits and pieces that I need to complete my project. For sewists who do <a href="https://www.gotextilefabrics.com/production-system-garment-industry" target="_blank">production-style sewing</a>, cutting everything out in advance and pulling projects to sew as you have time may be one way to accomplish more sewing.</div><div><br /></div><div>You can download sewing planners from many locations simply by searching for "sewing planner." You can also purchase sewing planners on many online sites. <a href="https://promo.seamwork.com/free-planner/" target="_blank">Seamwork offers a visually appealing sewing planner for free.</a> This sewist uses a <a href="https://bulletjournal.com/" target="_blank">bullet journa</a>l to track her <a href="https://youtu.be/6PU6p63hZrg" target="_blank">sewing projects</a>. </div><div><br /></div><div>However, no matter which system you decide to use to track your sewing goals or intentions this year, don't substitute organizing activities for actual sewing! </div><div><br /></div><div>If you have sewing intentions for 2022 or advice for other sewists, let us know in the comments! </div>Mary Katherine Parkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11500734079315973325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6563053896746361473.post-69249490745108053202021-07-03T13:31:00.004-04:002021-07-03T13:31:57.712-04:00Schmetz Needles Presentation Coming - Save the Date!<p>If you subscribe to the Schmetz Needles newsletter, you might have noticed this: </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj4WOvFFFcKU72gq36KGU0uFV5z2icoo9grgC20R4PVYvhVUaFGAJT9KeI8ggjFm7euvkiTQuPeg9lx-sKbn__Y8d_TwHm1SJg3UXMVFDAGpk6viA9CYl5pjR8tP2G8b1lU5saR6CbiLgE/s707/ASGNOVA+Schmetz+Needles.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="487" data-original-width="707" height="441" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj4WOvFFFcKU72gq36KGU0uFV5z2icoo9grgC20R4PVYvhVUaFGAJT9KeI8ggjFm7euvkiTQuPeg9lx-sKbn__Y8d_TwHm1SJg3UXMVFDAGpk6viA9CYl5pjR8tP2G8b1lU5saR6CbiLgE/w640-h441/ASGNOVA+Schmetz+Needles.PNG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Yes, Rhonda will be doing a presentation for the Northern Chapter of the American Sewing Guild. How do you know if you should sew with this thread?
Well, if this thread is several decades old and the spool is wooden, it's probably past its prime. For sewists several generations ago, cotton thread was more utilitarian and probably not stored under ideal conditions. The easiest way to determine if you should sew with this thread is to pull a long section and apply steady traction on the thread ends. If it slowly gives way or disintegrates before snapping, it's not good to sew with. However, if it snaps, then it's probably ok. All thread will snap at some point, given enough tension.
Dr. Bob of Superior Threads demonstrates this technique. [There are many more videos on <a href="https://www.superiorthreads.com/videos/thread-therapy" target="_blank">Thread Therapy</a> here.]<div><br /><div>

So, what can you do with them if you can't use them on your machine or in your garments or quilts? </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://whip-stitch.com/your-thread-has-a-shelf-life/" target="_blank">Deborah Moebes</a> wrote a blog about expired thread and solicited possible uses from her readers. Now they are selling tickets for an online textile arts festival, one in a series they started in January. The latest version of Create DIY will run from June 10-12. All the lectures and workshops will be Zoomed and the classes include not just quilting but also dyeing, crochet, paper collage, etc. </p><p>Meg Cox wants to especially give a shout out for Liza Lucy's workshops, especially one on English Paper Piecing (EPP). This is for beginners and because she learned from her, she knows how passionate Liz Lucy is about EPP and that she's a terrific teacher. The workshop comes with a kit which is complete and thoughtful. She is doing two other classes as well you might enjoy. Go <a href="https://www.quiltfest.com/upcoming-shows-and-events/create-diy/" target="_blank">here for more info and to register for Create DIY in June.</a></p><div><br /></div>Mary Katherine Parkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11500734079315973325noreply@blogger.com0
